FormulaHow the coil weight is worked out

A coil is a ring of wound strip. The ring cross-section times the strip width gives the volume; the same weight also comes out of the developed strip length.

L (m)   = π (OD² − ID²) / (4 t) / 1000W (kg) = π/4 × (OD² − ID²) × width × ρ / 109

ParameterCommon value
Core ID505 / 508 / 610 mm
Mill coil OD (max)1,800 – 2,000 mm
Strip width1,000 – 1,500 mm
Strip thickness0.5 – 8 mm
Coil weight2 – 8 t
Coil is wound under tension, so real strip length runs 1–3% under the geometric figure. Treat the output as a planning number.
TipsPractical notes
  • Slit coil is priced per tonne, not per metre — convert with the metres-per-tonne figure before comparing quotes.
  • Tell us the core ID you need (505 / 508 / 610 mm) at enquiry stage; re-coring after slitting adds cost.
  • If your line only takes small coils, say the maximum weight — we can split a mother coil rather than ship one heavy unit.

People also ask

Why does strip thickness not appear in the weight formula?

Because it cancels out. A thicker strip makes the coil shorter for the same ring volume, so volume — and weight — stay the same. Thickness only sets the strip length.

What is a normal coil weight for marine work?

2–8 t for slit coil. Mother coils from the mill run heavier; slit daughter coils are usually 2–5 t so they can be handled by a standard forklift or coil hook.

How accurate is the OD / ID method?

Within about 1–3%. The gap comes from winding tension, interleaving paper or oil film, and edge burr. For commercial settlement, weigh the coil on a certified scale.

Can you supply coil in 5083 or 5052?

Yes — 5083, 5086, 5754, 5052 and 5059 in coil and slit strip, plus 1100 and 3003 for non-structural lining. Widths from 1.5 mm slit upwards.

What is the difference between coil and sheet?

Same alloy and thickness range; coil is supplied wound, sheet is supplied flat cut to length. Coil suits continuous processing lines, sheet suits one-off fabrication.

Do you supply a mill certificate with coil?

Yes. Every batch ships with an EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate. Our partner mill holds DNV approval for 5083 in H116/H321. See certifications.
