Other 5xxx grades we supply
Same marine family, different balance of strength, formability and service temperature.
Which temper do you need?
Pick the stabilised temper for the exposure and forming requirements of each part.
The standard temper for elevated-temperature marine service and chemical tanks.
- 260 MPa tensile / 180 MPa proof min
- Better elevated-temperature strength than 5083
- Excellent corrosion resistance
Higher-strength temper for structural panels.
- 290 MPa tensile / 215 MPa proof min
- Used in chemical carriers
- Good weldability
Annealed or soft temper for forming and non-critical tanks.
- High ductility
- Used in tank heads and dished ends
- Formed panels
Where 5454 plate is used on board
5454 plate thickness starts at 3 mm; heavier sections carry primary loads.
Warm-service tanks
5454-H32 plate resists sensitisation in tanks operating above 65 °C.
3–12 mmChemical carriers
Tank bulkheads and deck plating in chemical tankers.
4–12 mmEngine-room structure
Foundations, brackets and panels in warm engine-room spaces.
3–10 mmHeated bunkers
Fuel and lube oil bunkers heated by cargo or steam.
3–8 mmWhy 5454 wins in marine service
Four numbers that decide the specification.
Same section modulus, lower center of gravity and fuel burn.
Compatible filler chemistry keeps joints corrosion-resistant without post-weld heat treatment.
Mill test certificate issued by the producing mill and countersigned by our QC team.
For long-term service above this, 5454 is the usual alternative.
Real-world corrosion resistance
8-year atmospheric and splash-zone exposure data on Al–Mg 5xxx alloys.
- Stabilised tempers: H116/H321 keep intergranular and exfoliation corrosion low in continuous immersion and splash zones.
- Lot-release testing: ASTM G66 ASSET and G67 NAMLT confirm resistance to sensitisation before shipment.
- Design matters: isolate aluminum from dissimilar metals, avoid standing water in crevices, and stay below the 65 °C long-term ceiling.
Actual rates depend on local water chemistry, design and maintenance.

5454 mechanical properties
Minimum / typical values per ASTM B209 / B928. Certified values are shown on the EN 10204 3.1 MTC supplied with each batch.
| Temper | Tensile Rm (MPa) | Proof Rp0.2 (MPa) | Elongation A50 (%) | Typical marine use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| O | 200–260 | 80–130 | ≥18 | Formed tanks, dished ends |
| H111 | 220–270 | ≥120 | ≥16 | Tanks, general fabrication |
| H32 | 260–320 | ≥180 | ≥14 | Warm-service tanks, chemical carriers |
| H34 | 290–350 | ≥215 | ≥10 | Structural panels, higher-strength tanks |
5454 resists sensitisation better than high-Mg grades in long-term warm service, making it the choice above 65 °C.
5454 against the rest of the 5xxx family
Every grade below we supply. Choose on strength, forming and service temperature — not on habit.
| Alloy | Mg content (%) | Tensile Rm (MPa) | Proof Rp0.2 (MPa) | Marine corrosion | Best used for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5083 | 4.0–4.9 | 305–385 | ≥215 | Excellent — G66/G67 | Hull, deck, LNG secondary barrier |
| 5086 | 3.5–4.5 | 275–345 | ≥195 | Excellent | Hull plating, fast craft, pressure vessels |
| 5754 | 2.6–3.6 | 215–275 | ≥130 | Very good | Superstructures, tanks, general fabrication |
| 5052 | 2.2–2.8 | 215–265 | ≥160 | Very good | Fuel tanks, panelling, ducting |
| 5454 | 2.4–3.0 | 240–290 | ≥180 | Excellent at temperature | Warm service above 65 °C, chemical carriers |
| 5182 | 4.0–5.0 | 275–350 | ≥130 | Good | Tank bodies, stiffeners, reinforcement |
Typical values for common marine tempers. Higher-magnesium grades give more strength but were designed for different forming limits — confirm the temper before substituting.

3.1 MTCFrequently asked questions
When should I use 5454 instead of 5083?
Use 5454 for warm-service tanks, engine-room parts and chemical carriers where long-term temperatures exceed 65 °C.
What temper is standard for 5454 tanks?
H32 for most warm-service tanks. H34 when higher strength is needed. O/H111 for formed heads.
Is 5454 approved by classification societies?
Yes. DNV and other major societies list 5454 for marine applications; certification is available on request.
What certificate comes with each order?
EN 10204 3.1 MTC per batch, with classification society certification available on request.
What thickness range can you supply?
Plate 3–50 mm, sheet 0.5–6 mm, coil slit to width.
What filler wire is recommended?
ER5356 for most work; ER5183 where higher joint strength is required.
Can you supply cut-to-size 5454 plate?
Yes — send dimensions or a nesting file for a quote.
How does 5454 perform in salt-water splash?
Excellent. It resists pitting and exfoliation in splash and atmospheric zones.
