Why 5182 wins in marine service
Four numbers that decide the specification.
Same section modulus, lower center of gravity and fuel burn.
Compatible filler chemistry keeps joints corrosion-resistant without post-weld heat treatment.
Mill test certificate issued by the producing mill and countersigned by our QC team.
For long-term service above this, 5454 is the usual alternative.
Real-world corrosion resistance
8-year atmospheric and splash-zone exposure data on Al–Mg 5xxx alloys.
- Stabilized tempers: H116/H321 keep intergranular and exfoliation corrosion low in continuous immersion and splash zones.
- Lot-release testing: ASTM G66 ASSET and G67 NAMLT confirm resistance to sensitization before shipment.
- Design matters: isolate aluminum from dissimilar metals, avoid standing water in crevices, and stay below the 65 °C long-term ceiling.
Actual rates depend on local water chemistry, design and maintenance.

5182 mechanical properties
Minimum / typical values per ASTM B209 / B928. Certified values are shown on the EN 10204 3.1 MTC supplied with each batch.
| Temper | Tensile Rm (MPa) | Proof Rp0.2 (MPa) | Elongation A50 (%) | Typical marine use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| O | 230–276 published range | confirm on MTC | ≥18 | Deep drawing, tank heads |
| H111 | 260–270 published range | confirm on MTC | ≥12 | Tank bodies, stiffeners, panels |
| H32 / H34 | confirm on MTC | confirm on MTC | — | Stiffeners, brackets |
Published tensile values for 5182 differ by temper and by governing standard — EN 485-2, EN 14286 and ASTM B209 do not agree. We quote the ordered temper and standard, then confirm on the Mill Test Certificate. No single figure should be used for design.
5182 forms we supply
Feedstock for the press rather than scantling for the hull.
| Form | Thickness | How it is supplied | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coil | 0.5–3 mm | Slit to width, edge-dressed and recoiled | Slitting partner capability |
| Sheet | 0.5–6 mm | Sheared, levelled and cut to length | Slitting partner to 3 mm; partner mills above |
5182 is not a classification-society marine alloy. It appears in tank bodies and drawn parts, not in hull structure — check the grade before checking the price.

Published tensile figures for 5182 do not agree between standards — EN 485-2, EN 14286 and ASTM B209 give different values for the same temper. These are the published ranges, not a specification. We quote the temper and standard you order and confirm the figures on your Mill Test Certificate.
When to specify 5182
Deep-drawn tank bodies and formed parts where 5754 runs out of strength.
| Application | Why 5182 fits | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Tanker barrels and dished heads | Deep-draws in the annealed temper and carries more strength than 5754 at the same gauge | Strength depends heavily on temper — do not quote a single figure |
| Baffles, brackets and stiffeners | Holds shape in thinner gauge than 5754 | 5754 is easier to form and weld for simple internals |
| Automotive closure panels | Mature supply chain with consistent lot-to-lot forming behavior | Marine orders still carry full certificate traceability |
| Formed parts that need strength after drawing | H111 retains some strength after forming | Confirm springback on the actual lot |
| Marine primary hull | NOT on the main hull alloy list | 5083 or 5086 |
5182 is a tank-body and formed-parts alloy. Treat it as a hull material only with class approval.
Common substitution mistakes
With 5182, the usual error is quoting one strength number for all tempers.
| Mistake | Why it fails | Correct choice |
|---|---|---|
| Quoting a single tensile figure for 5182 | Published values for O span roughly 230 to 276 MPa and H111 about 260 to 270 MPa, across different standards | Specify temper and standard, then confirm on the certificate |
| Using 5182 for primary hull plating | It is not on the main hull alloy list | 5083 or 5086 |
| Substituting 5754 into a 5182 barrel to save cost | Lower strength at the same gauge, and the barrel is a load path | Keep 5182 for the barrel; 5754 for internals |
| Mixing heats in one deep-draw run | Springback varies between heats and the parts will not repeat | Lock a single heat for large formed orders |
| Running 5182 in sustained warm service | High-Mg 5xxx can sensitize above roughly 65 °C | 5454 for warm service |
For formed orders, tell us the run size. Large runs should be locked to one heat.
From the supply floor
What we check before a lot is released.
Temper and standard pinned
We ask for the temper (O or H111) and the governing standard before quoting. 5182 figures move a lot between EN 485-2, EN 14286 and ASTM B209.
Lot consistency for deep drawing
For formed orders we lock a single heat so springback stays repeatable across the run.
Chemistry confirmation
Mg 4.0–5.0% and Mn 0.20–0.50% per EN 573-3, confirmed on the certificate.
Coil and slit edge
Slit width and edge condition confirmed before release; deep-drawn coil orders are locked to one heat.
Documentation
EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate per batch; class-society inspection available on request.
Limitations
5182 is a forming alloy for tank bodies. Its boundaries are set by the press.
No single strength figure
Values differ by temper and by standard. We quote the ordered temper and standard, then confirm on the certificate.
Not a hull alloy
Not on the main hull alloy list. Use it for tank bodies, stiffeners and brackets.
Forming repeatability
Springback varies between heats; large formed runs should lock one heat.
Temperature
Sustained service above roughly 65 °C is outside the recommended range. Use 5454 instead.
Classification
Class-society inspection is available on request; not every batch ships with survey by default.
5182 against the rest of the 5xxx family
Choose on strength, forming and service temperature — not habit. Values are minima or published ranges for common tempers; confirm against the MTC before substituting.
| Alloy | Mg content (%) | Tensile Rm (MPa) | Proof Rp0.2 (MPa) | Marine corrosion | Best used for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5083 | 4.0–4.9 | 305–385 | ≥215 | Excellent — G66/G67 | Hull, deck, LNG secondary barrier |
| 5086 | 3.5–4.5 | 275 min | ≥195 | Excellent | Hull plating, fast craft, pressure vessels |
| 5754 | 2.6–3.6 | 190–240 | ≥80 | Very good | Superstructures, tanks, general fabrication |
| 5052 | 2.2–2.8 | 214–262 | ≥160 | Very good | Fuel tanks, panelling, ducting |
| 5454 | 2.4–3.0 | 215–285 | ≥85 | Excellent at temperature | Warm service above 65 °C, chemical carriers |
| 5182 | 4.0–5.0 | 230–350 | ≥130 | Good | Tank bodies, stiffeners, reinforcement |
Higher-Mg grades give more strength but different forming limits and corrosion windows. Values are minima or published ranges for common tempers — always confirm the temper and thickness band on the Mill Test Certificate before substituting.

What we need to quote 5182
Each form asks different questions. Answer these and a quote stops being an estimate.
Coil
Coil orders fail on dimensions, not on alloy.
Drawing depth and press capability
O temper for deep draws, H111 for moderate work. State which you run.
Thickness, slit width and number of slits
State the widths and how many of each — one coil can yield several.
Coil inner diameter
508 mm or 610 mm, matched to your uncoiler mandrel.
Maximum coil weight
Set by your crane or coil car, not by what the mill can wind.
Delivery port and packing
Coil ships eye-to-sky or eye-to-side. State which your unloading can handle.
Sheet
Sheet quotes move on gauge tolerance and flatness, not just on alloy.
Drawing depth and number of draws
5182 is specified for forming behaviour, not for scantling strength.
Thickness and tolerance band
State whether you are working to ASTM or EN tolerances — the bands differ.
Sheet size, or cut to length from coil
Cut-to-length from coil is usually the economical route for longer pieces.
Whether levelling is required
Formed panels and flat linings do not need the same flatness.
Quantity by weight or by sheet count
Both are workable. Weight is how mills price, count is how you receive.
