5086 Aluminum Plate & Sheet for Hull and Superstructure
5086 in H116 and H321 for hull plating, work decks and formed panels — supplied as plate or sheet from 0.5 to 50 mm, cut to length with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate per batch.
Other 5xxx grades we supply
Same marine family, different balance of strength, formability and service temperature.
Which temper do you need?
Pick the stabilized temper for the exposure and forming requirements of each part.
The stabilized marine temper for hull plating and pressure hulls.
- 275 MPa tensile / 195 MPa proof min
- ASTM B928 marine temper
- Splash zone & permanent immersion
Thermally stabilized; used alongside H116 for welded hull structure.
- Same 275 / 195 MPa minimums per ASTM B928
- Lower-temperature stabilization
- Fast craft and workboat hulls
For formed panels and non-critical structure where forming wins over strength.
- Values vary by lot — confirm on the MTC
- Better formability than H116
- O temper for bent parts
Where 5086 goes on board
Thicker sections than sheet; delivered cut-to-length for the yard to nest and fit.
Bottom & side shell
Primary hull plating; resists slamming, berthing and ice impact.
5–20 mm
Main deck
Working deck and platform plating under cargo, vehicles and foot traffic.
5–12 mm
Bulwark & fender
Rake, stem and fendering where moderate strength with good weldability matters.
4–8 mm
LNG barrier
Secondary barrier and cryogenic supports; keeps toughness at low temperature.
3–6 mm
Why 5086 plate is specified
Four numbers that matter for yard and class society reviews.
Lower scantlings, reduced fuel burn and better stability for the same hull.
Joint reaches parent-metal strength; no PWHT required for 5xxx assemblies.
Passes ASTM G66 ASSET and G67 NAMLT lot-release testing.
Keeps toughness at cryogenic temperatures; common in LNG secondary barriers.
Corrosion performance in service
Al–Mg 5xxx alloys with stabilized tempers are designed for continuous marine exposure.
- Stabilized tempers: H116/H321 control intergranular and exfoliation corrosion in continuous immersion and splash zones.
- Lot-release testing: ASTM G66 ASSET and G67 NAMLT confirm resistance to sensitization before shipment.
- Joint design: Crevices should drain freely; aluminum must be isolated from steel, copper and graphite fittings.
Actual rates depend on water chemistry, coating system and maintenance regime.

Mechanical properties
Minimum / typical values per ASTM B928 / B209. Certified values are shown on the EN 10204 3.1 MTC supplied with each batch.
| Temper | Tensile Rm (MPa) | Proof Rp0.2 (MPa) | Elongation A50 (%) | Typical marine use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H116 | 275 min | ≥195 | ≥10 | Hull plating, splash zone, weather decks |
| H321 | 275 min | ≥195 | 10–12 | Fast craft hulls, welded structure |
| H111 / H112 | confirm on MTC | confirm on MTC | — | Formed panels, non-critical structure |
| O | confirm on MTC | confirm on MTC | — | Deep-drawn and bent parts |
ASTM B928 lists 275 MPa min tensile and 195 MPa min proof for 5086-H116 across 1.60–50.00 mm — unlike 5083, there is no thickness step-down. Values for O and H111/H112 depend on the ordered lot; confirm against the Mill Test Certificate.
5086 forms we supply
Plate carries the scantling; sheet carries the formed panels.
| Form | Thickness | How it is supplied | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plate | 3–50 mm | Plasma or saw cut to length, up to 12,000 mm | Partner mill rolling range |
| Sheet | 0.5–6 mm | Sheared, levelled and cut to length | Slitting partner to 3 mm; partner mills above |
5086 is specified as plate where scantling strength governs and as sheet where the part is formed. State gauge and forming route together so the temper matches the work.

When to specify 5086
Choose it when the plate has to form, not when it has to carry the heaviest load.
| Application | Why 5086 fits | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Formed hull panels and curved plating | Forms more easily than 5083; lower crack rate on tight roll and press work | Bend radius changes with thickness and temper — trial bend before production |
| Long multi-pass weld runs | Lower Mg than 5083, so hot-crack sensitivity is generally lower on long seams | ER5356 for general fabrication; ER5183 for primary structure |
| Fast craft and workboat hulls | 275 MPa min tensile at H116 covers light scantlings with easier forming | Above roughly 24 m, or under heavy load, move to 5083 |
| Low-temperature and cryo-adjacent structure | Retains toughness at sub-zero service temperature | Confirm the design temperature against the mill test certificate |
| Primary hull on large vessels | NOT the default — H116 minimums run about 10% below 5083 | 5083-H116 or H321 |
5086 is a forming and weldability choice, not a downgrade of 5083. Size the scantlings to 275 MPa, not to 305.
Common substitution mistakes
These swaps look equivalent on a spec sheet and are not.
| Mistake | Why it fails | Correct choice |
|---|---|---|
| Dropping 5086 into a 5083 scantling unchanged | ASTM B928 minimums are 275 MPa tensile and 195 MPa proof for H116 — about 10% below 5083. Same thickness is under-strength | Re-run the scantlings, or stay with 5083 |
| Treating 5086 and 5083 as freely interchangeable | Classification rules approve them as separate alloys; a swap is an engineering change | Get the substitution accepted by the society before cutting |
| Using H32 for hull or splash zone | H32 does not carry the stabilized-temper qualification for continuous seawater service | H116 or H321 |
| Designing to a fixed 1.5t bend radius | Bend radius varies with thickness and temper, and published values disagree widely | Trial bend on the actual lot, or request bend-test data |
| Running 5086 in sustained service above 65 °C | High-Mg 5xxx can sensitize at sustained elevated temperature | 5454 for warm service |
Send the intended service and we will confirm temper, filler and test package before you commit.
From the supply floor
What we check before a lot is released for marine use.
Temper verification
We confirm the marking reads H116 or H321. H32 is rejected for hull and splash-zone orders.
Thickness-bound mechanicals
ASTM B928 lists 275 MPa min tensile and 195 MPa min proof for 5086-H116 across 1.60–50.00 mm. We reconfirm against the mill test certificate.
Forming check
Bend radius is not a fixed multiple of thickness. We trial-bend or supply bend-test data for the ordered lot before a production run.
Weld filler match
ER5356 suits general fabrication; ER5183 for primary structure where groove-weld demand is higher.
Documentation
EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate per batch; class-society inspection available on request.
Limitations
5086 trades roughly 10% strength for formability. This is where that trade ends.
Strength
275 MPa min tensile and 195 MPa min proof at H116, roughly 10% below 5083 at the same thickness.
Temperature
Sustained service above 65 °C is outside the marine temper qualification. Use 5454 instead.
Forming
Bend radius varies with thickness and temper; no single value applies across the range.
Substitution
Not a drop-in for 5083. Scantlings and class approval both need re-checking.
Classification
Class-society inspection is available on request; not every batch ships with survey by default.
5086 against the rest of the 5xxx family
Choose on strength, forming and service temperature — not habit. Values are minima or published ranges for common tempers; confirm against the MTC before substituting.
| Alloy | Mg content (%) | Tensile Rm (MPa) | Proof Rp0.2 (MPa) | Marine corrosion | Best used for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5083 | 4.0–4.9 | 305–385 | ≥215 | Excellent — G66/G67 | Hull, deck, LNG secondary barrier |
| 5086 | 3.5–4.5 | 275 min | ≥195 | Excellent | Hull plating, fast craft, pressure vessels |
| 5754 | 2.6–3.6 | 190–240 | ≥80 | Very good | Superstructures, tanks, general fabrication |
| 5052 | 2.2–2.8 | 214–262 | ≥160 | Very good | Fuel tanks, panelling, ducting |
| 5454 | 2.4–3.0 | 215–285 | ≥85 | Excellent at temperature | Warm service above 65 °C, chemical carriers |
| 5182 | 4.0–5.0 | 230–350 | ≥130 | Good | Tank bodies, stiffeners, reinforcement |
Higher-Mg grades give more strength but different forming limits and corrosion windows. Values are minima or published ranges for common tempers — always confirm the temper and thickness band on the Mill Test Certificate before substituting.

What we need to quote 5086
Each form asks different questions. Answer these and a quote stops being an estimate.
Plate
Plate orders are sized by nesting and by weight, not by piece count.
Whether the plate is formed or flat
5086 forms better than 5083. Flat plate may be cheaper in another grade.
Plate size or nesting drawing
Cut-to-length works from your dimensions or nesting file. Both are accepted.
Quantity by weight or by plate count
Plate is priced by weight and often shipped by nesting, not by piece.
Whether you need the 40 mm strength band confirmed
Above 40 mm the minimum drops. Say so if your scantlings are calculated at 305 MPa.
Delivery port and packing
Plate ships on skids or in containers. Both change the freight picture.
Sheet
Sheet quotes move on gauge tolerance and flatness, not just on alloy.
How far the sheet is being formed
5086 is chosen for formed hull work. Tell us the bend radius and the forming method.
Thickness and tolerance band
State whether you are working to ASTM or EN tolerances — the bands differ.
Sheet size, or cut to length from coil
Cut-to-length from coil is usually the economical route for longer pieces.
Whether levelling is required
Formed panels and flat linings do not need the same flatness.
Quantity by weight or by sheet count
Both are workable. Weight is how mills price, count is how you receive.
Frequently asked questions
Quick answers for specifiers and buyers.
What is 5086 aluminum plate used for?
5086-H116/H321 plate is used for boat hulls, decks, bulwarks, pressure vessels and LNG secondary barriers. It trades a small amount of strength against excellent seawater corrosion resistance and formability.
Is 5086 the same as 5083?
No. 5083 has higher magnesium and higher minimum strength (305 MPa vs 275 MPa). 5086 is slightly more formable and still fully marine-qualified; many yards accept either grade for non-primary scantlings.
What welding filler should I use?
ER5183 for primary structure where joint strength must match parent metal. ER5356 is acceptable for general fabrication. Neither 5083 nor 5086 requires post-weld heat treatment.
What certificate comes with each order?
An EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate per batch, issued by the producing mill and countersigned after independent re-inspection. DNV certification is available with the order.
What thickness and size can you supply?
5086 plate from 3 mm to 50 mm; widths up to 2,650 mm standard and 3,000 mm on request; cut-to-length up to 12,000 mm.
Is 5086 suitable for cryogenic service?
Yes. 5xxx alloys retain toughness at LNG temperatures and are widely used for secondary barriers and supports in LNG carriers and onshore tanks.
How do I avoid galvanic corrosion in a mixed hull?
Isolate aluminum from steel, copper and graphite with insulating washers, tapes or coatings. Use compatible fasteners — aluminum, 316 stainless or properly coated steel — and detail joints so water cannot stand in crevices.
How is the plate packed and shipped?
Plate ships on wooden stillages, banded and edge-protected, with PE/PVC film or white paper on request. A 20′ general container holds roughly 18–22 tonnes.
Need a 5086 plate quotation?
Send grade, temper, thickness, width and quantity — we quote against current mill availability.
