Other 5xxx grades we supply
Same marine family, different balance of strength, formability and service temperature.
Which temper do you need?
Pick the stabilized temper for the exposure and forming requirements of each part.
The default stabilized temper for hull and weather-deck plating.
- 305 MPa tensile / 215 MPa proof min
- ASTM G66 & G67 qualified
- Splash zone & permanent immersion
Thermally stabilized; specified interchangeably with H116 for primary structure.
- Same minimum strength as H116
- Lower-temperature stabilization
- Common in LNG secondary barrier
For formed panels and non-critical structure where forming wins over as-welded strength.
- 275–350 MPa tensile / 125 MPa proof min
- Deep panels, cabins, interiors
- O temper for bent parts
Where 5083 is used on board
5083 sheet thickness starts at 0.5 mm; heavier sections carry primary loads.
Deck & superstructure panels
Sheet panels for weather decks, deck houses and wheelhouse sides in 1.5–6 mm.
1.5–6 mm
Formed liners & bulkheads
5083-O and H111 sheet are brake-pressed or roll-formed into interior bulkheads and tank liners.
1.5–4 mm
Small craft hull plating
Thin hull and chine plating for work boats, patrol craft and landing craft where weight matters.
2–6 mm
LNG secondary barrier
Corrugated 5083 sheet forms the secondary barrier in membrane LNG tanks.
1.5–3 mm
Why 5083 wins in marine service
Four numbers that decide the specification.
Same section modulus, lower center of gravity and fuel burn.
Compatible filler chemistry keeps joints corrosion-resistant without post-weld heat treatment.
Mill test certificate issued by the producing mill and countersigned by our QC team.
For long-term service above this, 5454 is the usual alternative.
Real-world corrosion resistance
8-year atmospheric and splash-zone exposure data on Al–Mg 5xxx alloys.
- Stabilized tempers: H116/H321 keep intergranular and exfoliation corrosion low in continuous immersion and splash zones.
- Lot-release testing: ASTM G66 ASSET and G67 NAMLT confirm resistance to sensitization before shipment.
- Design matters: isolate aluminum from dissimilar metals, avoid standing water in crevices, and stay below the 65 °C long-term ceiling.
Actual rates depend on local water chemistry, design and maintenance.

5083-H116 / H321: 305 MPa min tensile / 215 MPa min proof per ASTM B928. Gauges outside the B928 range and other tempers are rated per ASTM B209 — confirm your specific gauge and temper against the MTC.
5083 forms we supply
One alloy, three supply routes. Temper and standard stay the same — only the form changes.
| Form | Thickness | How it is supplied | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sheet | 0.5–6 mm | Sheared, levelled and cut to length | Slitting partner to 3 mm; partner mills above |
| Plate | 3–50 mm | Plasma or saw cut to your nesting, up to 12,000 mm | Partner mill rolling range |
| Coil | 0.5–3 mm | Slit to width, edge-dressed and recoiled | Slitting partner capability |
Above roughly 6 mm the product is supplied as plate and the 40 mm tensile step-down applies. Coil dimensions are set by your uncoiler — give us the mandrel size and the heaviest coil your line lifts.

When to specify 5083
Use it for the parts that cannot fail in seawater.
| Application | Why 5083 fits | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Primary hull & deck plating | Highest strength among common 5xxx marine alloys + G66/G67 qualified | Specify H116 or H321; H32 is not a substitute |
| LNG secondary barrier / cryo tanks | Retains toughness down to –100 °C | Weld procedure qualification required |
| Fast craft & high-performance hulls | Strength-to-weight ratio is best in class | Forming radius increases above 10 mm; trial bend recommended |
| Splash-zone structures | Corrosion qualification covers continuous immersion and splash | Paint system and insulation still required |
| Long-term warm service >65 °C | NOT suitable — high-Mg 5xxx can sensitize at sustained temperature | Choose 5454 instead |
If your part sees sustained temperature above 65 °C, start with the 5454 page instead.
Common substitution mistakes
These swaps look similar on paper but fail in service.
| Mistake | Why it fails | Correct choice |
|---|---|---|
| Using 5083-H32 instead of H116/H321 | H32 lacks the stabilized grain structure and G66/G67 qualification for continuous seawater | H116 or H321 for hull and splash zone |
| Replacing 5083 with 5052 in load-bearing hull | 5052 has lower Mg content and lower strength; not in EN 13195 primary-hull alloy list | 5083 or 5086 |
| Specifying 5083 for long-term warm tanks | Sustained >65 °C can sensitize high-Mg 5xxx alloys | 5454 for warm service |
| Swapping H116 for H111 to save cost | H111 is not stabilized for splash zone; corrosion risk differs even if strength overlaps | H116/H321 for hull; H111 only for formed interior panels |
| Buying ‘5083 marine’ without G66/G67 | Unstabilized material may pass chemistry but fail corrosion lot-release | Request G66 ASSET + G67 NAMLT on the MTC |
When in doubt, send the intended use and we confirm the right temper and test package.
From the supply floor
What we check before a lot is released for marine use.
Temper verification
We confirm the marking reads H116 or H321. H32 is rejected for primary hull or splash-zone orders.
Lot-release corrosion tests
G66 ASSET and G67 NAMLT are non-negotiable for hull orders. Typical G67 results stay well below the acceptance band.
Gauge and flatness
Sheet is slit and cut to length from coil, then levelled. Our QC team checks gauge and flatness against the MTC before a lot is released.
Weld filler match
ER5183 is the default for primary structure; ER5356 suits general fabrication where groove-weld tensile demand is lower.
Documentation
EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate per batch; class-society inspection available on request.
Limitations
Where 5083 stops being the right answer.
Form and thickness boundary
Sheet runs to 6 mm and plate starts at 3 mm — the ranges overlap on purpose, because the mill route and the tolerance regime differ. Above 40 mm the ASTM B928 minimum drops from 305 to 285 MPa, so thickness and temper must be specified together.
Temperature
Long-term service above 65 °C sits outside the H116/H321 qualification — the marine temper does not exempt the alloy from sensitization. Use 5454 instead.
Forming
Minimum bend radius varies with thickness and temper. Confirm by trial bend or request bend-test data.
Welding
Heat-affected zone strength drops; design allowable stress should account for HAZ softening.
Classification
Class-society inspection is available on request; not every batch ships with survey by default.
5083 against the rest of the 5xxx family
Choose on strength, forming and service temperature — not habit. Values are minima or published ranges for common tempers; confirm against the MTC before substituting.
| Alloy | Mg content (%) | Tensile Rm (MPa) | Proof Rp0.2 (MPa) | Marine corrosion | Best used for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5083 | 4.0–4.9 | 305–385 | ≥215 | Excellent — G66/G67 | Hull, deck, LNG secondary barrier |
| 5086 | 3.5–4.5 | 275 min | ≥195 | Excellent | Hull plating, fast craft, pressure vessels |
| 5754 | 2.6–3.6 | 190–240 | ≥80 | Very good | Superstructures, tanks, general fabrication |
| 5052 | 2.2–2.8 | 214–262 | ≥160 | Very good | Fuel tanks, panelling, ducting |
| 5454 | 2.4–3.0 | 215–285 | ≥85 | Excellent at temperature | Warm service above 65 °C, chemical carriers |
| 5182 | 4.0–5.0 | 230–350 | ≥130 | Good | Tank bodies, stiffeners, reinforcement |
Higher-Mg grades give more strength but different forming limits and corrosion windows. Values are minima or published ranges for common tempers — always confirm the temper and thickness band on the Mill Test Certificate before substituting.

What we need to quote 5083
Each form asks different questions. Answer these and a quote stops being an estimate.
Sheet
Sheet quotes move on gauge tolerance and flatness, not just on alloy.
Temper: H116 or H321
H116 is the marine hull temper. H321 is strain-hardened and stabilised — state which one your drawings call up.
Thickness and tolerance band
State whether you are working to ASTM or EN tolerances — the bands differ.
Sheet size, or cut to length from coil
Cut-to-length from coil is usually the economical route for longer pieces.
Whether levelling is required
Formed panels and flat linings do not need the same flatness.
Quantity by weight or by sheet count
Both are workable. Weight is how mills price, count is how you receive.
Plate
Plate orders are sized by nesting and by weight, not by piece count.
Thickness, and whether it clears 40 mm
Above 40 mm the minimum drops to 285 MPa. Nesting designed to 305 will not hold.
Plate size or nesting drawing
Cut-to-length works from your dimensions or nesting file. Both are accepted.
Quantity by weight or by plate count
Plate is priced by weight and often shipped by nesting, not by piece.
Whether you need the 40 mm strength band confirmed
Above 40 mm the minimum drops. Say so if your scantlings are calculated at 305 MPa.
Delivery port and packing
Plate ships on skids or in containers. Both change the freight picture.
Coil
Coil orders fail on dimensions, not on alloy.
Temper, and whether it sees seawater
Continuous immersion calls for H116/H321 and G67 testing. Interior coil does not.
Thickness, slit width and number of slits
State the widths and how many of each — one coil can yield several.
Coil inner diameter
508 mm or 610 mm, matched to your uncoiler mandrel.
Maximum coil weight
Set by your crane or coil car, not by what the mill can wind.
Delivery port and packing
Coil ships eye-to-sky or eye-to-side. State which your unloading can handle.
Frequently asked questions
Which 5083 temper do I need for hull plating?
H116 is specified for most hull and splash-zone plating. H321 is accepted interchangeably and is often chosen for thicker sections or when the order references a wider thickness range.
What thickness and width can you supply?
Sheet 0.5–6 mm, plate 3–50 mm and coil 0.5–3 mm. Widths up to 2,650 mm (3,000 mm on request), cut to length up to 12,000 mm.
Is 5083 plate suitable for LNG tanks?
Yes. 5083 retains toughness at cryogenic temperatures and is widely used for LNG secondary barrier and storage-tank walls.
Can you supply cut-to-size plate, or only standard sizes?
We supply cut-to-size. Send us your nesting or finished dimensions, and we will quote against your spec rather than a fixed stock list.
Do you have classification society certification?
DNV certification is available with the order; other major classification societies can be requested. An EN 10204 3.1 MTC accompanies every batch.
What is the difference between 5083 plate and 5083 sheet?
Same alloy, different thickness ranges. Plate generally starts at 3 mm and is used for primary structure; sheet is thinner and is used for panels, decking and formed parts.
What filler wire should I use for welding 5083?
ER5183 for high-strength joints; ER5356 for general fabrication where a small strength mismatch is acceptable.
What certificate comes with each order?
An EN 10204 3.1 MTC per batch, issued by the producing mill and countersigned by our QC team after independent re-inspection.
