How to choose the aluminum alloy grade for aluminum profiles?

6061 T6 and 6063 T6 which alloy is more better?
1. What is 6061-T6 Alloy?
Think of 6061-T6 as the “strong and tough” aluminum alloy. Its main features are high strength and good toughness.
“T6” means:
- Solution Treatment: Heated to a very high temperature.
- Quenching: Quickly cooled down (like putting it in water).
- Artificial Aging: Heated again to a medium temperature and held there for a while. This process greatly increases the alloy’s strength and hardness.
Key Features:
- High Strength: Among common aluminum profiles, 6061-T6 has some of the highest tensile strength and yield strength (meaning it can handle heavy loads without bending or breaking easily).
- Good Machinability: It’s harder than 6063, but you can still cut, drill, and mill it well.
- Fairly Good Weldability: You can weld it using common methods. Important: Welding makes the metal near the weld weaker. To get its full strength back, it usually needs the T6 heat treatment again after welding.
- Good Corrosion Resistance: It resists rusting fairly well, especially in salty sea air (thanks to the Chromium). However, it’s usually not quite as corrosion-resistant as 6063-T6.
- Medium Extrusion Performance: Compared to 6063, it’s a bit harder to squeeze into very complex shapes during manufacturing, and the process might be a bit slower (because it’s stronger to begin with).
2. What is 6063-T6 Alloy?
Think of 6063-T6 as the “easy to shape and great looking” aluminum alloy. Its main features are excellent extrusion performance, outstanding surface finish after treatment, and very good corrosion resistance.
Key Features:
- Excellent Extrusion Performance: It flows very easily when shaped. This makes it great for creating complex shapes, thin walls, precise sizes, and smooth surfaces during manufacturing. Production is often faster and more efficient.
- Outstanding Surface Finishing: This is its BIGGEST advantage! It gives the best results for anodizing, creating a very even, dense, shiny, and brightly colored protective layer. Painting and other finishes also work very well on it.
- Excellent Corrosion Resistance: Because it has fewer impurities and a cleaner mix, its resistance to rust and corrosion (especially in normal air, industrial areas, or near the sea) is generally better than 6061-T6.
- Good Weldability: Welding is similar to 6061 using common methods. Important: Like 6061, the area near the weld becomes weaker and might need re-treatment if full strength is critical.
- Medium Strength: Its tensile strength and yield strength are lower than 6061-T6, but it’s still strong enough for many structural jobs.
3. What Are Their Similarities between of the 6061 and 6063?
6061-T6 and 6063-T6 share many important characteristics:
- Alloy Family: Both belong to the Al-Mg-Si series of aluminum alloys that get stronger with heat treatment (like T6).
- Heat Treatment State: Both are strengthened using the T6 process (Solution Treatment + Quenching + Artificial Aging) to reach their peak strength.
- How They Get Strong: Both rely mainly on the formation of Mg₂Si particles inside the metal for strength.
- Machinability: Both can be easily cut, drilled, and tapped (6061 is a bit harder, but both are machinable).
- Weldability: Both can be welded using common methods like TIG or MIG. However, for both, welding weakens the metal right next to the weld seam.
- Basic Corrosion Resistance: Both have the inherently good resistance to atmospheric corrosion that aluminum is known for.
- Wide Use: Both are among the most common and widely used aluminum alloys for making profiles (shapes like bars, tubes, channels).
