Small craft topsides
Sheet topside and deck panels for workboats and small ferries.
1.5–4 mm
Why 5754 wins in marine service
Four numbers that decide the specification.
Same section modulus, lower center of gravity and fuel burn.
Compatible filler chemistry keeps joints corrosion-resistant without post-weld heat treatment.
Mill test certificate issued by the producing mill and countersigned by our QC team.
For long-term service above this, 5454 is the usual alternative.
Real-world corrosion resistance
8-year atmospheric and splash-zone exposure data on Al–Mg 5xxx alloys.
- Stabilized tempers: H116/H321 keep intergranular and exfoliation corrosion low in continuous immersion and splash zones.
- Lot-release testing: ASTM G66 ASSET and G67 NAMLT confirm resistance to sensitization before shipment.
- Design matters: isolate aluminum from dissimilar metals, avoid standing water in crevices, and stay below the 65 °C long-term ceiling.
Actual rates depend on local water chemistry, design and maintenance.

5754 mechanical properties
Minimum / typical values per ASTM B209 / B928. Certified values are shown on the EN 10204 3.1 MTC supplied with each batch.
| Temper | Tensile Rm (MPa) | Proof Rp0.2 (MPa) | Elongation A50 (%) | Typical marine use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| O / H111 | 190–240 | ≥80 | ≥14 | Superstructures, tanks, dished ends |
| H22 / H32 | 220–270 | ≥130 | ≥8 | Panels and stiffeners needing more strength |
| H112 | confirm on MTC | confirm on MTC | — | Hot-rolled plate, welded structure |
EN 485-2 gives ranges for 5754 rather than fixed minimums: O/H111 Rm 190–240 with Rp0.2 ≥80, H22/H32 Rm 220–270 with Rp0.2 ≥130. ASTM B209 publishes different values — do not mix the two standards in one calculation.
5754 forms we supply
Secondary structure and tanks — supplied in whichever form the fabrication route needs.
| Form | Thickness | How it is supplied | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sheet | 0.5–6 mm | Sheared, levelled and cut to length | Slitting partner to 3 mm; partner mills above |
| Plate | 3–50 mm | Plasma or saw cut to length, up to 12,000 mm | Partner mill rolling range |
| Coil | 0.5–3 mm | Slit to width, edge-dressed and recoiled | Slitting partner capability |
5754 is not a primary hull alloy. Where scantling strength governs the design, 5083 or 5086 is the specification — not a thicker gauge of 5754.

When to specify 5754
The right call for secondary structure, formed parts and tanks — not for primary hull.
| Application | Why 5754 fits | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Superstructure and deckhouse paneling | Good corrosion behavior in marine atmosphere and easier forming than 5083 or 5086 | Keep it off bottom shell — it is not an EN 13195 hull alloy |
| Dished ends and deep-drawn tank heads | H111 draws more consistently than 5083 on deep work; scrap rate is lower | Confirm bend data for the ordered thickness |
| Non-pressure tanks, baffles and internals | Welded seam strength is better than 5052 at similar gauge | For small low-cost tanks, 5052 is often enough |
| Hatch coamings and interior panels | Lower cost than 5083 or 5086 with adequate strength for non-load-bearing parts | Do not use where scantlings govern |
| Primary hull shell or bottom plating | NOT suitable — not among the EN 13195 marine hull alloys (5059 / 5083 / 5086 / 5383) | 5083 or 5086 |
If the part carries hull load, start with the 5083 or 5086 page instead.
Common substitution mistakes
Most 5754 problems come from using it one step above where it belongs.
| Mistake | Why it fails | Correct choice |
|---|---|---|
| Using 5754 for bottom shell or primary hull | 5754 is not on the EN 13195 hull alloy list, and its strength is a range rather than a guaranteed minimum | 5083 or 5086 |
| Comparing 5754’s 240 MPa against 5083’s 305 MPa | 240 is the top of the EN 485-2 range for O/H111; 305 is a minimum. Typical versus minimum is not a like-for-like comparison | Compare like with like inside one standard |
| Mixing 5754 into a 5083 welded assembly | Joint strength follows the weaker parent metal | Design to the lower strength, or keep the grades separate |
| Specifying 5754 for sustained warm service | Above roughly 65 °C, high-Mg 5xxx can sensitize | 5454 for warm service |
| Assuming one bend radius across all thicknesses | H111 bend radius changes with gauge — mill test certificate data shows 1t at 4–5 mm and 2t at 6–7 mm | Confirm against the mill test certificate for the ordered gauge |
Tell us the part and the service temperature and we will confirm whether 5754 is the right tier.
From the supply floor
What we check before a lot is released.
Temper verification
We confirm H111, H22 or H32 as ordered — the EN 485-2 strength bands differ sharply between them.
Bend data by thickness
Mill test certificate data shows 90°/1t at 4–5 mm and 90°/2t at 6–7 mm for H111. Confirm against the certificate for the ordered gauge.
Band, not a single number
EN 485-2 gives ranges for 5754 rather than fixed minimums. We quote the band and the actual certificate values together.
Weld filler match
ER5356 is the usual choice; ER5183 where higher groove-weld strength is needed.
Documentation
EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate per batch; class-society inspection available on request.
Limitations
5754 is a secondary-structure alloy. These are the lines it should not cross.
Not a hull alloy
Not listed among the EN 13195 marine hull grades. Keep it to secondary structure and tanks.
Strength is a range
EN 485-2: O/H111 Rm 190–240 MPa with Rp0.2 ≥80; H22/H32 Rm 220–270 with Rp0.2 ≥130. Not a single figure.
Standard mixing
ASTM B209 publishes different values for 5754 than EN 485-2. Do not mix them in one calculation.
Temperature
Sustained service above roughly 65 °C is outside the marine temper qualification. Use 5454 instead.
Classification
Class-society inspection is available on request; not every batch ships with survey by default.
5754 against the rest of the 5xxx family
Choose on strength, forming and service temperature — not habit. Values are minima or published ranges for common tempers; confirm against the MTC before substituting.
| Alloy | Mg content (%) | Tensile Rm (MPa) | Proof Rp0.2 (MPa) | Marine corrosion | Best used for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5083 | 4.0–4.9 | 305–385 | ≥215 | Excellent — G66/G67 | Hull, deck, LNG secondary barrier |
| 5086 | 3.5–4.5 | 275 min | ≥195 | Excellent | Hull plating, fast craft, pressure vessels |
| 5754 | 2.6–3.6 | 190–240 | ≥80 | Very good | Superstructures, tanks, general fabrication |
| 5052 | 2.2–2.8 | 214–262 | ≥160 | Very good | Fuel tanks, panelling, ducting |
| 5454 | 2.4–3.0 | 215–285 | ≥85 | Excellent at temperature | Warm service above 65 °C, chemical carriers |
| 5182 | 4.0–5.0 | 230–350 | ≥130 | Good | Tank bodies, stiffeners, reinforcement |
Higher-Mg grades give more strength but different forming limits and corrosion windows. Values are minima or published ranges for common tempers — always confirm the temper and thickness band on the Mill Test Certificate before substituting.

What we need to quote 5754
Each form asks different questions. Answer these and a quote stops being an estimate.
Sheet
Sheet quotes move on gauge tolerance and flatness, not just on alloy.
What the sheet is sized against
Stiffness, corrosion allowance or forming. Each gives a different gauge.
Thickness and tolerance band
State whether you are working to ASTM or EN tolerances — the bands differ.
Sheet size, or cut to length from coil
Cut-to-length from coil is usually the economical route for longer pieces.
Whether levelling is required
Formed panels and flat linings do not need the same flatness.
Quantity by weight or by sheet count
Both are workable. Weight is how mills price, count is how you receive.
Plate
Plate orders are sized by nesting and by weight, not by piece count.
Thickness and what it is sized against
Stiffness, corrosion allowance or forming — each gives a different answer.
Plate size or nesting drawing
Cut-to-length works from your dimensions or nesting file. Both are accepted.
Quantity by weight or by plate count
Plate is priced by weight and often shipped by nesting, not by piece.
Whether you need the 40 mm strength band confirmed
Above 40 mm the minimum drops. Say so if your scantlings are calculated at 305 MPa.
Delivery port and packing
Plate ships on skids or in containers. Both change the freight picture.
Coil
Coil orders fail on dimensions, not on alloy.
Whether the surface is visible
Visible panels need a higher surface class than hidden linings.
Thickness, slit width and number of slits
State the widths and how many of each — one coil can yield several.
Coil inner diameter
508 mm or 610 mm, matched to your uncoiler mandrel.
Maximum coil weight
Set by your crane or coil car, not by what the mill can wind.
Delivery port and packing
Coil ships eye-to-sky or eye-to-side. State which your unloading can handle.
Frequently asked questions
What is 5754 used for on ships?
Superstructures, deck houses, tanks, bulkheads and general fabricated parts where high formability is needed.
Which temper should I order?
H111 for most marine sheet and plate. H112 for hot-rolled thicker plate. H32/H34 for higher-strength panels.
Is 5754 as corrosion resistant as 5083?
Very good, but 5083 is preferred for continuous immersion and splash zones. 5754 is excellent for superstructure and tanks.
