5454 Aluminum Sheet & Plate for Elevated-Temperature Service
5454 in H32 and H34 for elevated-temperature tanks and warm-service parts — supplied as sheet, plate or coil from 0.5 to 50 mm, with an EN 10204 3.1 certificate per batch.
Other 5xxx grades we supply
Same marine family, different balance of strength, formability and service temperature.
Which temper do you need?
Pick the stabilized temper for the exposure and forming requirements of each part.
The temper for sustained service above roughly 65 °C.
- 215 MPa min tensile / 85 MPa min proof
- Actuals usually higher — confirm on MTC
- Warm-service tanks, chemical carriers
Used where the part is formed before it goes into warm service.
- 215–285 MPa tensile / ≥85 MPa proof
- Formed tanks and dished ends
- H111 values vary — take them from the MTC
Higher-strength temper for structural panels.
- Confirm values on the MTC
- Structural panels, higher-strength tanks
- Less formable than H32
Where 5454 is used in warm service
5454 sheet thickness starts at 0.5 mm; heavier sections carry primary loads.

2–4 mm
Why 5454 wins in marine service
Four numbers that decide the specification.
Same section modulus, lower center of gravity and fuel burn.
Compatible filler chemistry keeps joints corrosion-resistant without post-weld heat treatment.
Mill test certificate issued by the producing mill and countersigned by our QC team.
For long-term service above this, 5454 is the usual alternative.
Real-world corrosion resistance
8-year atmospheric and splash-zone exposure data on Al–Mg 5xxx alloys.
- Stabilized tempers: H116/H321 keep intergranular and exfoliation corrosion low in continuous immersion and splash zones.
- Lot-release testing: ASTM G66 ASSET and G67 NAMLT confirm resistance to sensitization before shipment.
- Design matters: isolate aluminum from dissimilar metals, avoid standing water in crevices, and stay below the 65 °C long-term ceiling.
Actual rates depend on local water chemistry, design and maintenance.

5454 mechanical properties
Minimum / typical values per ASTM B209 / B928. Certified values are shown on the EN 10204 3.1 MTC supplied with each batch.
| Temper | Tensile Rm (MPa) | Proof Rp0.2 (MPa) | Elongation A50 (%) | Typical marine use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| H32 | 215 min | ≥85 | ≥14 | Warm-service tanks, chemical carriers |
| O / H111 | 215–285 | ≥85 | ≥16 | Formed tanks, dished ends |
| H34 | confirm on MTC | confirm on MTC | — | Structural panels, higher-strength tanks |
H32 minimums of 215 MPa tensile and 85 MPa proof are taken from the mill test certificate; actual results are usually higher, so confirm against the Mill Test Certificate. Published H111 values vary between sources — take them from the certificate for the ordered lot.
5454 forms we supply
Chosen for temperature first — the form follows the code case.
| Form | Thickness | How it is supplied | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sheet | 0.5–6 mm | Sheared, levelled and cut to length | Slitting partner to 3 mm; partner mills above |
| Plate | 3–50 mm | Plasma or saw cut to length, up to 12,000 mm | Partner mill rolling range |
| Coil | 0.5–3 mm | Slit to width, edge-dressed and recoiled | Slitting partner capability |
Service temperature is quoted before form or gauge. 5454 is not on the classification-society hull list — it is a warm-service and chemical-exposure alloy.

When to specify 5454
The 5xxx you move to when sustained temperature rules the others out.
| Application | Why 5454 fits | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Hot asphalt and hot-oil tankers | Built for elevated-temperature service where high-Mg 5xxx would sensitize | State the design temperature on the order |
| Chemical tankers and process vessels | Pressure-vessel code coverage plus better thermal stability | Confirm the design code and inspection regime |
| Structure near engine rooms and hot piping | Holds up where 5083, 5086 and 5052 fall outside their qualification | Separate continuous temperature from short-term peak |
| Welded pressure vessels | Accepted for pressure-vessel service under the applicable code | Allowable stress depends on stress level and temperature |
| Primary hull shell | NOT the default — 5454 is a temperature-driven specification, not a hull grade | 5083 or 5086 |
If the service is ambient seawater, 5454 is the wrong spend. This is a temperature decision.
Common substitution mistakes
The expensive ones here all show up two or three years after delivery.
| Mistake | Why it fails | Correct choice |
|---|---|---|
| Building a hot tank in 5083 to save cost | Sustained service above roughly 65 °C sensitizes high-Mg 5xxx; intergranular corrosion appears near welds after a few years | 5454 for sustained warm service |
| Treating 200 °C as a continuous limit | 200 °C is an intermittent peak. Continuous service is generally quoted around 150 °C | State continuous and peak separately on the order |
| Assuming 5454 is a strength upgrade | H32 minimums of 215 MPa tensile and 85 MPa proof sit below 5083 | Size the scantlings to 5454, not to 5083 |
| Using 5454 where service is ambient seawater | You pay for thermal stability the application never uses | 5083 or 5086 |
| Ordering without a design temperature | Allowable stress depends on temperature and the code case | Give continuous temperature, peak temperature and design code |
Send the temperature profile with the inquiry. We will not quote a warm-service order without it.
From the supply floor
What we check before a lot is released for warm service.
Design temperature captured
We ask for continuous temperature, peak temperature and the applicable code before quoting. Orders without them get flagged.
Conservative mechanicals
The mill test certificate lists 215 MPa min tensile and 85 MPa min proof for H32. Actual results are usually higher — both appear on the certificate.
Chemistry confirmation
Mg 2.4–3.0%, Mn 0.50–1.0%, Cr 0.05–0.20% per EN 573-3, confirmed on the certificate.
Weld filler match
ER5554 is the matched filler for 5454; ER5356 where the code case allows. We confirm before release.
Documentation
EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate per batch; class-society inspection available on request.
Limitations
5454 solves temperature, not strength. Both limits sit below.
Temperature is two numbers
Continuous service is generally quoted around 150 °C; short-term peak up to 200 °C. They are not interchangeable.
Strength
H32: 215 MPa min tensile and 85 MPa min proof per the mill test certificate. Below 5083 — size accordingly.
Not a hull alloy
A temperature-driven specification, and not on the EN 13195 hull alloy list.
Code dependency
Allowable stress depends on the design code, stress level and inspection regime.
Classification
Class-society inspection is available on request; not every batch ships with survey by default.
5454 against the rest of the 5xxx family
Choose on strength, forming and service temperature — not habit. Values are minima or published ranges for common tempers; confirm against the MTC before substituting.
| Alloy | Mg content (%) | Tensile Rm (MPa) | Proof Rp0.2 (MPa) | Marine corrosion | Best used for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5083 | 4.0–4.9 | 305–385 | ≥215 | Excellent — G66/G67 | Hull, deck, LNG secondary barrier |
| 5086 | 3.5–4.5 | 275 min | ≥195 | Excellent | Hull plating, fast craft, pressure vessels |
| 5754 | 2.6–3.6 | 190–240 | ≥80 | Very good | Superstructures, tanks, general fabrication |
| 5052 | 2.2–2.8 | 214–262 | ≥160 | Very good | Fuel tanks, panelling, ducting |
| 5454 | 2.4–3.0 | 215–285 | ≥85 | Excellent at temperature | Warm service above 65 °C, chemical carriers |
| 5182 | 4.0–5.0 | 230–350 | ≥130 | Good | Tank bodies, stiffeners, reinforcement |
Higher-Mg grades give more strength but different forming limits and corrosion windows. Values are minima or published ranges for common tempers — always confirm the temper and thickness band on the Mill Test Certificate before substituting.

What we need to quote 5454
Each form asks different questions. Answer these and a quote stops being an estimate.
Sheet
Sheet quotes move on gauge tolerance and flatness, not just on alloy.
Continuous and peak service temperature
This is the reason the alloy exists. Without it we cannot confirm the grade.
Thickness and tolerance band
State whether you are working to ASTM or EN tolerances — the bands differ.
Sheet size, or cut to length from coil
Cut-to-length from coil is usually the economical route for longer pieces.
Whether levelling is required
Formed panels and flat linings do not need the same flatness.
Quantity by weight or by sheet count
Both are workable. Weight is how mills price, count is how you receive.
Plate
Plate orders are sized by nesting and by weight, not by piece count.
Continuous service temperature and peak temperature
5454 is the 5xxx grade intended for warm service — continuous service is taken at about 150 °C with short peaks to 200 °C. State both.
Plate size or nesting drawing
Cut-to-length works from your dimensions or nesting file. Both are accepted.
Quantity by weight or by plate count
Plate is priced by weight and often shipped by nesting, not by piece.
Whether you need the 40 mm strength band confirmed
Above 40 mm the minimum drops. Say so if your scantlings are calculated at 305 MPa.
Delivery port and packing
Plate ships on skids or in containers. Both change the freight picture.
Coil
Coil orders fail on dimensions, not on alloy.
Continuous and peak service temperature
The whole reason to use 5454. Without it, another grade may be cheaper and stronger.
Thickness, slit width and number of slits
State the widths and how many of each — one coil can yield several.
Coil inner diameter
508 mm or 610 mm, matched to your uncoiler mandrel.
Maximum coil weight
Set by your crane or coil car, not by what the mill can wind.
Delivery port and packing
Coil ships eye-to-sky or eye-to-side. State which your unloading can handle.
