Other 5xxx grades we supply
Same marine family, different balance of strength, formability and service temperature.
Which temper do you need?
Pick the stabilised temper for the exposure and forming requirements of each part.
Standard temper for tank bodies, stiffeners and sheet metal parts.
- 280 MPa tensile / 130 MPa proof min
- Very good formability
- Used in tank truck bodies
Strain-hardened tempers for higher-strength panels.
- Higher strength than H111
- Used in stiffeners and brackets
- Good fatigue resistance
Annealed for deep drawing and complex forming.
- High ductility
- Deep-drawn tank heads
- Formed components
Where 5182 sheet is used on board
5182 sheet thickness starts at 0.5 mm; heavier sections carry primary loads.
Tank truck & tanker bodies
5182-H111 sheet is widely used for welded tank barrels and stiffeners.
1.5–6 mmMarine tank panels
Sheet panels for fuel, water and ballast tanks on workboats and ferries.
2–6 mmStiffeners & brackets
Formed stiffeners, brackets and cleats inside tanks and engine rooms.
2–5 mmTank heads & baffles
Formed heads, baffles and manways in tank production.
1.5–4 mmWhy 5182 wins in marine service
Four numbers that decide the specification.
Same section modulus, lower center of gravity and fuel burn.
Compatible filler chemistry keeps joints corrosion-resistant without post-weld heat treatment.
Mill test certificate issued by the producing mill and countersigned by our QC team.
For long-term service above this, 5454 is the usual alternative.
Real-world corrosion resistance
8-year atmospheric and splash-zone exposure data on Al–Mg 5xxx alloys.
- Stabilised tempers: H116/H321 keep intergranular and exfoliation corrosion low in continuous immersion and splash zones.
- Lot-release testing: ASTM G66 ASSET and G67 NAMLT confirm resistance to sensitisation before shipment.
- Design matters: isolate aluminum from dissimilar metals, avoid standing water in crevices, and stay below the 65 °C long-term ceiling.
Actual rates depend on local water chemistry, design and maintenance.

5182 mechanical properties
Minimum / typical values per ASTM B209 / B928. Certified values are shown on the EN 10204 3.1 MTC supplied with each batch.
| Temper | Tensile Rm (MPa) | Proof Rp0.2 (MPa) | Elongation A50 (%) | Typical marine use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| O | 255–315 | 100–150 | ≥18 | Deep drawing, tank heads |
| H111 | 280 min | ≥130 | ≥12 | Tank bodies, stiffeners, panels |
| H32 | 305–360 | ≥170 | ≥10 | Stiffeners, brackets, panels |
| H34 | 340–390 | ≥210 | ≥8 | Higher-strength structural sheet |
5182 is widely used for tank truck and marine tank bodies where formability and weldability are critical.
5182 against the rest of the 5xxx family
Every grade below we supply. Choose on strength, forming and service temperature — not on habit.

| 5754 | 2.6–3.6 | 215–275 | ≥130 | Very good | Superstructures, tanks, general fabrication |
| 5052 | 2.2–2.8 | 215–265 | ≥160 | Very good | Fuel tanks, panelling, ducting |
| 5454 | 2.4–3.0 | 240–290 | ≥180 | Excellent at temperature | Warm service above 65 °C, chemical carriers |
| 5182 | 4.0–5.0 | 275–350 | ≥130 | Good | Tank bodies, stiffeners, reinforcement |
Typical values for common marine tempers. Higher-magnesium grades give more strength but were designed for different forming limits — confirm the temper before substituting.

3.1 MTCFrequently asked questions
What is 5182 used for in marine?
Tank bodies, stiffeners, brackets, panels and formed parts where good weldability and formability are needed.
Which temper is standard for 5182 sheet?
H111 for most tank and panel work. H32/H34 for higher-strength stiffeners.
Is 5182 suitable for fuel tanks?
Yes, it is commonly used for marine fuel and water tanks, including tank truck and tanker bodies.
What filler wire should I use?
ER5356 is standard; ER5183 can be used where higher joint strength is needed.
What certificate comes with each order?
EN 10204 3.1 MTC per batch, with classification society certification available on request.
What thickness range can you supply?
Sheet 0.5–6 mm, plate 3–50 mm, coil slit to width.
How does 5182 compare to 5052?
5182 has higher magnesium content, slightly higher strength and similar formability. It is often preferred for tank bodies.
Can you supply cut-to-size 5182 sheet?
Yes — send dimensions or a nesting file for a quote.
Need a 5182 marine sheet quotation?
