Other 5xxx grades we supply
Same marine family, different balance of strength, formability and service temperature.
Which temper do you need?
Pick the stabilised temper for the exposure and forming requirements of each part.
Stabilised temper for hull plating and pressure hulls where lower strength than 5083 is acceptable.
- 275 MPa tensile / 195 MPa proof min
- Better formability than 5083
- Good salt-water resistance
Strain-hardened tempers for panels and tanks.
- Higher strength in thinner gauges
- Used in small craft and superstructures
- H116 often substituted
Thermally stabilised; matches H116 for marine classification.
- Same minimum strength as H116
- Suitable for welded primary structure
- Used in fast craft hulls
Where 5086 sheet is used on board
5086 sheet thickness starts at 0.5 mm; heavier sections carry primary loads.
Small craft hull & chine
5086 sheet bends to tight radii, making it ideal for small boat hulls and chine strakes.
1.5–6 mmFormed tanks & ducts
Sheet is roll-formed into tanks, ducts and ventilation trunking.
1–4 mmDeck house panels
Lightweight panels for accommodation and deck houses in fast craft.
1.5–3 mmPressure hull liners
Thin 5086 sheet is used for liners and baffles inside pressure vessels.
1–3 mmWhy 5086 wins in marine service
Four numbers that decide the specification.
Same section modulus, lower center of gravity and fuel burn.
Compatible filler chemistry keeps joints corrosion-resistant without post-weld heat treatment.
Mill test certificate issued by the producing mill and countersigned by our QC team.
For long-term service above this, 5454 is the usual alternative.
Real-world corrosion resistance
8-year atmospheric and splash-zone exposure data on Al–Mg 5xxx alloys.
- Stabilised tempers: H116/H321 keep intergranular and exfoliation corrosion low in continuous immersion and splash zones.
- Lot-release testing: ASTM G66 ASSET and G67 NAMLT confirm resistance to sensitisation before shipment.
- Design matters: isolate aluminum from dissimilar metals, avoid standing water in crevices, and stay below the 65 °C long-term ceiling.
Actual rates depend on local water chemistry, design and maintenance.

5086 mechanical properties
Minimum / typical values per ASTM B209 / B928. Certified values are shown on the EN 10204 3.1 MTC supplied with each batch.
| Temper | Tensile Rm (MPa) | Proof Rp0.2 (MPa) | Elongation A50 (%) | Typical marine use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| O | 240–315 | 95–160 | ≥18 | Deep-drawn and bent parts |
| H111 | 250–325 | ≥100 | ≥16 | Formed panels, interiors |
| H116 | 275 min | ≥195 | ≥10 | Hull plating, pressure vessels |
| H321 | 275–345 | ≥195 | 10–12 | Fast craft hulls, welded structure |
5086 offers slightly lower strength than 5083 but forms more readily in tight radii.
5086 against the rest of the 5xxx family
Every grade below we supply. Choose on strength, forming and service temperature — not on habit.
| Alloy | Mg content (%) | Tensile Rm (MPa) | Proof Rp0.2 (MPa) | Marine corrosion | Best used for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5083 | 4.0–4.9 | 305–385 | ≥215 | Excellent — G66/G67 | Hull, deck, LNG secondary barrier |
| 5086 | 3.5–4.5 | 275–345 | ≥195 | Excellent | Hull plating, fast craft, pressure vessels |
| 5754 | 2.6–3.6 | 215–275 | ≥130 | Very good | Superstructures, tanks, general fabrication |
| 5052 | 2.2–2.8 | 215–265 | ≥160 | Very good | Fuel tanks, panelling, ducting |
| 5454 | 2.4–3.0 | 240–290 | ≥180 | Excellent at temperature | Warm service above 65 °C, chemical carriers |
| 5182 | 4.0–5.0 | 275–350 | ≥130 | Good | Tank bodies, stiffeners, reinforcement |
Typical values for common marine tempers. Higher-magnesium grades give more strength but were designed for different forming limits — confirm the temper before substituting.

3.1 MTCFrequently asked questions
When should I choose 5086 instead of 5083?
Choose 5086 when forming requirements are tighter and the design allows a small strength reduction. It is common in fast craft hulls and pressure vessels.
What temper is used for 5086 hull plating?
H116 is the standard. H321 is also accepted and is sometimes specified for thermally stabilised plate.
What thickness range do you stock?
3–50 mm plate and 0.5–6 mm sheet are standard; coil can be slit to order.
Is 5086 suitable for welded tanks?
Yes. Its matched filler chemistry and stable tempers make it a common choice for marine fuel and water tanks.
What certificate comes with the material?
EN 10204 3.1 MTC per batch, with DNV certification available on request.
Can 5086 replace 5083 in a hull specification?
Only with design approval. It has lower minimum tensile strength, so the scantlings may need adjustment.
What filler wire is recommended?
ER5183 for high-strength joints; ER5356 for general work.
Do you supply cut-to-length 5086 plate?
Yes — send your nesting or finished dimensions for a mill-direct quote.
Need a 5086 marine sheet quotation?
Send grade, temper, thickness, width and quantity — we quote against current mill availability.
