Other 5xxx grades we supply
Same marine family, different balance of strength, formability and service temperature.
Which temper do you need?
Pick the stabilised temper for the exposure and forming requirements of each part.
The default stabilised temper for hull and weather-deck plating.
- 305 MPa tensile / 215 MPa proof min
- ASTM G66 & G67 qualified
- Splash zone & permanent immersion
Thermally stabilised; specified interchangeably with H116 for primary structure.
- Same minimum strength as H116
- Lower-temperature stabilisation
- Common in LNG secondary barrier
For formed panels and non-critical structure where forming wins over as-welded strength.
- 275–350 MPa tensile / 125 MPa proof min
- Deep panels, cabins, interiors
- O temper for bent parts
Where it goes on board
Thickness decides the application. Cut-to-length means the yard only final-fits.
Hull shell
Bottom and side plating; resists slamming and berthing impact.
4–8 mmMain deck
Platform plating under cargo and foot traffic.
4–12 mmSuperstructure
Cabin, wheelhouse and trunking panels; accepts marine paint.
1.5–6 mmMachinery
Foundations, ductwork and mounts. Non-magnetic, non-sparking.
3–10 mmWhy 5083 wins in marine service
Four numbers that decide the specification.
Same section modulus, lower centre of gravity and fuel burn.
Joint reaches parent-metal strength. No post-weld heat treatment.
Passes ASSET and NAMLT lot-release testing.
Above this long-term, 5454 is the usual alternative.
Real-world corrosion resistance
8-year atmospheric and splash-zone exposure data on Al–Mg 5xxx alloys.
- Stabilised tempers: H116/H321 keep intergranular and exfoliation corrosion low in continuous immersion and splash zones.
- Lot-release testing: ASTM G66 ASSET and G67 NAMLT confirm resistance to sensitisation before shipment.
- Design matters: isolate aluminium from dissimilar metals, avoid standing water in crevices, and stay below the 65 °C long-term ceiling.
Actual rates depend on local water chemistry, design and maintenance.

Mechanical properties
Minimum / typical values per ASTM B928 / B209. Certified values are shown on the EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate supplied with each batch.

| H321 | 305–385 | ≥215 | 10–12 | Hull plating, LNG secondary barrier |
Plate above 40 mm thickness is rated at 285 MPa min tensile and 200 MPa min proof stress per ASTM B928.
5083 against the rest of the 5xxx family
Every grade below we supply. Choose on strength, forming and service temperature — not on habit.

| 5083 | 4.0–4.9 | 305–385 | ≥215 | Excellent — G66/G67 | Hull, deck, LNG secondary barrier |
| 5086 | 3.5–4.5 | 275–345 | ≥195 | Excellent | Hull plating, fast craft, pressure vessels |
| 5754 | 2.6–3.6 | 215–275 | ≥130 | Very good | Superstructures, tanks, general fabrication |
| 5052 | 2.2–2.8 | 215–265 | ≥160 | Very good | Fuel tanks, panelling, ducting |
| 5454 | 2.4–3.0 | 240–290 | ≥180 | Excellent at temperature | Warm service above 65 °C, chemical carriers |
| 5182 | 4.0–5.0 | 275–350 | ≥130 | Good | Tank bodies, stiffeners, reinforcement |
Typical values for common marine tempers. Higher-magnesium grades give more strength but were designed for different forming limits — confirm the temper before substituting.
Marine standards & classification
Certification and testing that shipyard buyers actually ask for.
How we supply
Standard packing and documentation for shipyard orders.
Cut-to-length
Width up to 2,650 mm, length up to 12,000 mm. Plates arrive ready for nesting, so yard cutting is limited to final fit.

Quick answers for specifiers and buyers.
What are the typical applications of 5083 marine sheet?
Sheet up to 6 mm goes into cabin and wheelhouse panels, machinery foundations, ductwork, marine interiors and small-craft hulls up to about 24 m. Heavier hull and deck sections are supplied as plate, 3–50 mm.
What is the difference between 5083 H116 and H321?
H116 is strain-hardened and stabilised; H321 receives a low-temperature stabilising treatment. Both meet the same ASTM B928 corrosion qualification and are specified interchangeably for hull and splash-zone plating.
Can 5083 be welded?
Yes — MIG and TIG. ER5183 filler is the default for primary hull structure; ER5356 suits general fabrication where the groove-weld tensile requirement is less demanding. As a non-heat-treatable alloy, 5083 needs no post-weld heat treatment.
What certificate comes with each order?
An EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate per batch, issued by the producing mill and countersigned after independent re-inspection. DNV certification is available with the order.
What thickness and width can you supply?
1.5–50 mm thickness; widths up to 2,650 mm standard, 3,000 mm on request; cut-to-length up to 12,000 mm. Full figures are on the 5083 aluminum sheet page specification page.
Is 5083 suitable for warm tanks or engine rooms?
Long-term service above about 65 °C can sensitise high-Mg 5xxx alloys, raising intergranular corrosion risk. For those areas, 5454 is the usual alternative.
How do I avoid galvanic corrosion in a mixed hull?
Isolate aluminium from steel, copper and graphite with insulating washers, tapes or coatings. Use compatible fasteners — aluminium, 316 stainless or properly coated steel — and detail joints so water cannot stand in crevices.
How is the sheet packed and shipped?
Plate and sheet ship on wooden stillages, banded and edge-protected, with PE/PVC film or white paper on request. A 20' general container holds roughly 18–22 tonnes.
