UnitIn kilograms
1 kilogram1.000
1 metric tonne1,000
1 pound0.45359
1 UK hundredweight (112 lb)50.802
1 US short ton (2,000 lb)907.185
The metric tonne and the US short ton differ by about 10%. Mixing them up on a purchase order is a common and expensive mistake — check which one your supplier quotes in.
TipsPractical notes
  • Ask suppliers to quote in metric tonnes with a stated tolerance; most mills do, but traders sometimes quote short tons.
  • For a quick sanity check, 1 m² of 1 mm aluminium plate weighs about 2.7 kg.
  • Divide a plate weight by kg/m² to get the area, which is how you work backwards from a weight allowance to a cutting list.

People also ask

Is a tonne the same as a ton?

No. A metric tonne is 1,000 kg. A US short ton is 907 kg and a UK long ton is 1,016 kg. Always confirm which one a quote uses.

How do I get kg/m² for aluminium plate?

Multiply thickness in mm by the alloy density in kg/m³ and divide by 1,000. For 6 mm 5083: 6 × 2,680 / 1,000 = 16.08 kg/m².

What is the density of aluminium in lb/in³?

About 0.096–0.102 lb/in³ depending on alloy, which is roughly one third that of steel.

Why does the same plate weigh differently from different suppliers?

Density differs slightly by alloy (up to 5%), and thickness tolerance has an even bigger effect: a plate 0.3 mm over nominal weighs about 5% more.

Can I use this for stainless or steel?

No — the section-weight note uses aluminium densities. Steel is around 7,850 kg/m³, nearly three times the density of aluminium.
