Aluminium square bar weight calculator
Solid square bar to any side and cut length. Per piece and for the batch — useful for frames, spacers and fabricated fittings.
Bar dimensions
Material
Side × side gives the section in mm²; convert to m², multiply by length in metres and density.
A (m²) = (s / 1000)²W (kg) = A × (L / 1000) × ρ
| Side (mm) | kg per metre (5xxx) |
|---|---|
| 12 | 0.386 |
| 20 | 1.072 |
| 25 | 1.675 |
| 30 | 2.412 |
| 40 | 4.288 |
| 50 | 6.700 |
| 60 | 9.648 |
| 100 | 26.80 |
- Square bar over 60 mm is usually only available as extruded 6xxx, not 5xxx — check before designing a welded joint.
- For welded hull frames, rectangular hollow section or flat bar on edge is stiffer per kilo than solid square.
- Add 2–3% to the calculated weight for saw kerf when you are ordering a cutting list rather than a weight.
People also ask
Is square bar available in 5083?
Up to about 60 mm, yes, but availability is thinner than for extruded 6xxx. Larger solid sections are almost always 6061 or 6063 extrusion.
Square bar or rectangular hollow — which for frames?
Hollow section wins on stiffness per kilo and is the normal choice for hull frames. Solid square suits places needing local bearing or tapping.
What length is standard?
5,000 or 6,000 mm from most mills. Cut lengths to 500 mm increments are usually free; odd lengths may carry a cutting charge.
How do I convert kg/m to kg per piece?
Multiply the kg/m figure by the length in metres. The calculator already does this — set the cut length and the number of pieces.
Does square bar come with a certificate?
Yes, 3.1 on request. See certifications.
