Start Guide of CNC Machining

1.What is CNC Machining of Aluminum Profiles?

CNC machining uses computer-controlled equipment (milling machines, lathes, machining centers) to precisely cut, drill, tap, and groove extruded aluminum profiles with specific cross-sectional shapes.

CNC Machining VS Manual Machining:

1.High Precision & Consistency: Superior dimensional accuracy and repeatability

2.Complex Shape Capability: Custom holes, slots, and contours at exact locations

3.Efficient Production: Ideal for batch processing with automated operations

4.Surface Prep Ready: Creates optimized bases for anodizing/painting

2. What are the CNC Machining Features?

  • Face Machining: Flattening ends, chamfering, cutting relief grooves
  • Drilling/Tapping: Mounting holes, connection points, threaded holes
  • Slot/Contour Milling: Keyways, T-slots, custom notches, mounting platforms
  • Engraving: Part numbers, logos, identification mark

3. Which aluminum extrusions are suitable for CNC machining?

Not all aluminum extrusions are equally suitable or require CNC machining. The key factors are the aluminum extrusion material grade and the extrusion structure.

The following are the alloy grades suitable for aluminum extrusions

  • 6061-T6 / 6063-T5/T6: Most commonly used! They offer excellent machinability, good strength, corrosion resistance, and weldability.
6061 has slightly higher strength, but 6063 has better extrusion performance (easier to achieve complex cross-sections) and a smoother surface.
  • 6005-T5/T6: Performance lies between 6061 and 6063, and is also one of the most commonly used alloys in the market today.
  • 7075-T6: High-strength aluminum alloy (aerospace grade), with high hardness resulting in poorer machining performance compared to 6-series alloys, and higher costs. Typically used in applications requiring extremely high strength (such as aerospace and high-end sports equipment), requiring careful attention to parameters and tool wear during machining.
  • 5052-H32: Excellent corrosion resistance and formability, but lower strength than 6-series alloys, with average machinability. Primarily used for sheet metal components rather than structural profiles.

Avoid/use with caution: Pure aluminum (1xxx series, too soft and prone to tool sticking), high-silicon aluminum alloys (casting grade, extremely hard and prone to tool wear).

4. What factors should be considered when processing aluminum profiles?

2

1. Clamping and positioning

First, we must address several factors, including irregular cross-sections, soft material, and thin walls that are prone to deformation. We need to use specific fixtures to secure the material, thereby minimizing vibration and interference.

2. Optimization of cutting parameters
Aluminum has a low melting point, and heat generated by low-speed friction can cause the material to soften and stick to the tool.
However, at high cutting speeds, heat is carried away by the chips, reducing thermal deformation. Additionally, cutting parameters must be dynamically adjusted in coordination.
When increasing the spindle speed, the feed rate must be simultaneously increased to maintain a reasonable cutting thickness per tooth.
If the feed rate is insufficient, the cutting edge may experience excessive friction and heat generation due to an overly thin cutting layer, leading to tool adhesion and accelerated wear. Conversely, if the feed rate is excessive or the cutting depth is too large, the increased cutting force may cause vibration and tool chipping.

3. Cooling and lubrication: For aluminum profiles, it is best to use water-soluble cutting fluid/oil mist (MQL), which effectively cools, lubricates, and removes chips. Choose cutting fluid specifically designed for aluminum to avoid corrosion.

5. CNC Machined Aluminum Applications

  • EV battery trays
  • Architectural window systems
  • Electrical rail guides
  • Multi-fin heat sinks

CNC machining transforms aluminum profiles into high-precision components. Success depends on optimal alloy selection and intelligent fixturing.
